Marnina Gonick and Susanne Gannon's Becoming Girl were selected as one of the honourable mentions in the 2016 Women's and Gender Studies et Recherches Féministes Outstanding Scholarship Prize.

This annual prize, established in 2002 (and previously called the CWSA/ACÉF Book Prize), acknowledges the important contributions that Women's and Gender Studies scholars have made to the field in the form of a monograph, edited collection, or a significant documentary film.

In Becoming Girl the editors interrogate the everyday of girlhood through the collaborative feminist methodology of collective biography. Located within the emergent interdisciplinary field of girlhood studies, this scholarly collection demonstrates how memories can be used to investigate the ways in which girlhood is culturally, historically, and socially constructed.

Competing with 15 other monographs and anthologies, the Committee noted that Becoming Girl:

"is a theoretically sophisticated and methodologically complex contribution into the interdisciplinary field of girlhood studies that invites us to move beyond our habitual ways of thinking girlhood through historical, ethnographic, sociological, and cultural lenses. [...] A model of self-reflexive, eloquent, and inspiring theory making and method application, this book will be an invaluable resource for the feminists methods classroom."
